And at the macro level, even if we assume that science is able to give natural and plausible explanations for all the phenomena in the natural world, without needing any supernatural factors at all, the question still remains: Is this the final explanation? What is behind the laws of nature themselves? Why do the universe and laws of nature even exist, instead of nothing? Why are the laws of nature fixed and unchanging? Why is reality as it is, and not otherwise?
And science is unable to answer these questions. Here it reaches the unequivocal limit of its authority. All scientists can say is “this is how it is,” or “this is just reality.” Once scientists got to the basics of the laws of nature, they explained everything they could. What is beyond that is a matter of metaphysics, of what is beyond physics and nature. Indeed, questions of this kind are of interest to philosophers and theologians, not scientists.
